Acne can be frustrating and exfoliating can be great, as long as it’s done right. Exfoliate the wrong way and you may have a recipe for disaster, AKA even more acne.
Avoid Scrubs
If you’ve got acne, one of the worst things you can do for your skin; is use a scrub. Acne is full of dirts, oils and bacteria, which is why you should never pop or pick a pimple/acne. It’s also the same reason you shouldn’t use anything with granulars or beads in it. Using a granular based exfoliant/scrub can “scrape” off the top of pimples and acne and in turn cause the bacteria to spread and in turn cause more breakouts.

Try a Muslin Cloth
Muslin Cloth’s are some of my favourite skincare tools out there, they’re cheap and effective. Instead of using a specific exfoliating product try incorporating a muslin cloth into your daily (or weekly) cleansing routine. Muslin Cloth’s gently exfoliate the skin which means they help deep clean the pores without irritating the skin. To use them just cleanse your skin as usual but remove your cleanser by using small circular motions with the muslin cloth instead of a cotton pad. Just make sure to wash them after every use.
Use a Chemical Exfoliant
I love a good chemical exfoliant. I know, Chemical Exfoliant are two words that send shivers down your spine and your brains telling you to stay far, far away from them, but they can actually be a lot more gentle than granular exfoliants. Chemical exfoliators use ingredients like Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Beta Hydroxy Acids which gently slough away dead skin cells and help lift up dirt and grime from the pores. You only need to use them once or twice a week to see skin-glowing results and they’re perfect for acne because they don’t spread bacteria, but still help renew the skin. Chemical Exfoliants I swear by include: Go-To Skincare Exfoliating Swipeys and Jurlique Fruit Enzyme Exfoliant.
