Flaky skin isn’t attractive, put some foundation on top? You look like an over-baked pastry but you needn’t fear because there are many ways around this common beauty problem that you, every other dry-skinned girl and myself have encountered.

The first step to any makeup application, dry skin or not is good skin preparation, without good skin you can’t have good makeup so get into a skincare routine and stick to it. When it comes to dry skin (and well skin in general) I’m a huge believer in natural and organic products because they work with the skin, not against it.

Cleanser:

A gentle, non-stripping cleanser is your first step; I love cleansing oils, they work a serious treat as not only do they leave your skin nice and clean but nice and hydrated too.

Serum:

The second step is an amazing serum (or skin oil) which is designed to hydrate and replenish your skin. I have many, many, many favourites but my top two are Rosehip Oil/Argan Oil and NUDE Skincare Pro Genius Treatment Oil. Use your serum nightly after cleansing and before moisturising (using a serum in the morning can cause the skin to have too much slip to it, resulting in your makeup fading quicker)

Moisturiser:

Next step is a fantastic moisturiser, my favourite brand for moisturiser isn’t available outside of Australia and has sadly closed up shop (R.I.P U Little Beauty) so I’ve had to find a new favourite and that is *Jurlique Rose-Hydrating Face Cream, which I’ve been using for a while now and love the way it makes my skin feel all soft and smooth

Exfoliate:

Last but not least exfoliate!! Use a gentle scrub once or twice a week, or do one better and use a muslin cloth (they gently exfoliate the skin) to remove your cleanser.

Next of all we are moving onto the makeup. The priming, application and formula are the three keys that you need to be well-aware of.

Primer:

A primer is a fantastic way to not only increase the staying power of your makeup but it also helps it to glide onto the skin a heck of a lot easier, my favourite primer is Smashbox Photo Finish Oil Free Primer, I find the original version still works great for my dry skin but they also have a hydrating formula that gets rave reviews.

Application:

When it comes to flaky foundation application can also be a culprit. Foundation, buffing and stippling brushes are common favourites for applying foundation but on dry skin they can be a disaster, why you ask? Their bristles can micro-exfoliate your skin making it look extra flaky! I prefer to use (clean) dry fingers when applying foundation on-to dry skin because it helps the product to melt into the skin resulting in a glowy finish.

Foundation:

As for a good foundation; my favourite (I’m talking holy grail status here) is Bobbi Brown Luminous Moisturising Foundation. It gives you glowy, gorgeous skin in a flash with good coverage, fantastic hydration and doesn’t accentuate dry patches, expensive but oh so worth it.
