Back to the Basics: Blush

Blush (blusher or rouge) is a matte or shimmer pink toned product designed to give a natural flush of colour to the face.

Blush is available in a multitude of formulas, including (but not limited to) powder, cream, liquid, gel and stain.

Powders are the most commonly used formula and are generally the easiest to apply. Best applied after applying makeup & powdering the skin with a blush brush or angled contouring brush.

Creams are great for everyone and are relativity easy to apply (and my personal favourite formula) Can be applied before or after foundation with fingertips, a foundation or stippling brush.

Liquid blushes can be tricky to apply because of their high pigment. Best applied before or after foundation with a stippling brush as minimal product is applied to the skin, but fingertips or a foundation brush can also be used.

Gel and stains are quite sheer making them great for beginners. Best applied with the fingertips on bare skin, but can also be used after foundation.

Blush should be applied onto the center of the cheeks on a relaxed face. Do not smile whilst applying blush otherwise product will be applied to low and may drag your features down. Try blending upwards towards the cheekbones.

Blush is designed to give skin a natural flush of colour to the cheeks as though you had just been for a jog, seen someone you have a thing for or got a healthy dose of Vitamin D. Blush isn’t designed to be used:

  • underneath the cheekbones to contour
  • as a bronzer
  • as a setting powder
