Dry lips can be a struggle (I should know!) and adding a lipstick can make them look and feel even worse. Lipstick can completely change your look, boring outfit? Add a bright red lip, colourful clothes? Try a nude lip, but dry looking lips? Never a good look.
Hydrate the lips
If you’ve got severely dry lips you may need to do a little more than just applying a lip balm and calling it a day. Keep lips in tip top condition by using the tips in my how to guide: how to fix dry lips.
Prep the lips
The first (and most important step) before any lip colour application is to prep the lips. Use a good creamy lip balm to give lips a moisture kick and let it sit for around 10 minutes, then blot by kissing a tissue.
Ditch the liner
Some people dislike lip liners, I’m not one of them. I love lip liners for giving lips a perfect shape and making lipstick last, but if you’ve got very dry lips it’s a recipe for disaster. Also, don’t even think about applying concealer onto the lips to prep them.
Go creamy
Matte finishes are beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but if you’re a dry lip sufferer then you’re best off to go with a creamy, hydrating formula. They don’t last as long, but they aren’t drying and give lips a healthy, hydrated finish.
Add a gloss
Gloss is a little old fashioned, but it really can make all the difference to making your lips look larger and healthier. Just apply a small amount of clear gloss to the center of the lips (all over and it can look like you’re drooling) for a hydrated looking pout.
Try a balm
Sometimes I love going sheer with the lips. Tinted lip balms are really great for giving a hint of colour and making the lips look hydrated and healthy. Plus they are super easy to apply!
