Hair may not be my forte but what’s the point of having nice makeup and bad hair? To rock the Gatsby look, yes you need the makeup but you also most certainly need the hair too. The 1920s were all about glamorous up dos, finger waves and hair accessories. Every outfit was accompanied by embellished hair pins and decorative hairbands, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think the hair was oh-so beautiful. Don’t forget to complete the 1920s look with matching makeup!
Finger waves are my favourite look from the 1920s but I also LOVE glamorous updos, they make me think of amazing roaring parties (a la la The Great Gatsby)
Updo
Take a small amount of Schwarzkopf Instant Volume Powder into the palm of your hand and massage it into the roots of your hair. This will give hair more volume and texture so that the updo holds better (bonus, the Schwarzkopf version is specifically designed for long lasting hold, making it a great alternative to hairspray, especially if you don’t like the way it makes your hair feel or it irritates your scalp)
After brushing your hair with a paddle brush to distribute the powder and smooth down any kinks in the hair, put a semi-loose decorative headband on (the more glam the better!)
Take a small section of hair, and gently lift up a section of the hairband with your fingers, wrap the section of hair around the hairband and then gently pull any remaining hair down, take another section of hair (and any of the remaining hair) and wrap it around the headband again. Continue wrapping your hair around the hairband until the whole hairband is covered and you have no remaining hair down. It’s best to use small sections of hair as it makes the updo looks neater and polished.
Tuck in any loose bits of hair into the hairband and make sure to tuck the back of your hair further into the hairband to make the updo tighter and stay in place longer. Use a few bobby pins that match your hair colour to secure the look in place.
Spritz hair with Schwarzkopf Extra Care Strong Styling Hairspray to prevent hair moving and sliding. After applying the hairspray smooth down any flyways with your fingers. (This hairspray doesn’t feel sticky and keeps hair in place for ages!)
Finished!
Finger Waves
Start by taking hair out of the updo. The longer you leave the hairband in, the tighter the curls will be.
Using a fine comb, gently comb through the front sections of the hair to give more definition and create a finger wave effect.
Take a small teasing brush and brush through the rest of your hair for more volume and defined waves, brush each section of hair individually for the best results.
After you’ve brushed your hair it should look textured and wavy, play around with a few different loose hairbands to get the look you desire.
