How to Curl Your Eye Lashes

$

0

Curling your lashes is one of the easiest, simplest ways to open up and brighten your eyes. They may look a little intimidating, but the results produced when teamed with mascara are fantastic.

How to curl your eye lashes

How to use a Mechanical Lash Curler

1. Start off with clean lashes (NEVER use a mechanical eyelash curler after mascara or you may damage your lashes)

2. Place your eyelash curler at the very base of your lashes and ensure you don’t grab any skin, clamp the lash curler and hold for 5 seconds.

3. Walk the eyelash curler out to the middle of your lashes, clamp and hold for 5 seconds.

4. Walk the lash curler out to the very tips of your lashes, clamp and hold for 5 seconds. For extra curl repeat the steps.

5. Apply two coats of mascara using a curved wand, ensure to wiggle at the base of your lashes.

6. You’re done!

How to use a Heated Lash Curler

1. Start off with clean lashes

2. Apply two coats of mascara with a curved wand in a zig-zag motion & allow to dry.

3. Once your lash wand is heated hold it at the base of the lashes for 15 to 20 seconds and then at the tips.

4. You’re done!

Lash Curling 101

Which lash curler do you recommend?

I love (and always use) Shu Uemura Lash Curler, it seems like a lot of money to spend on a lash curler, but it doesn’t hold cult status for no reason. If you are seeking a budget friendly alternative I quite like the Sally Hansen La Cross Eyelash Curler. With mechanical lash curlers it is important to change the pads every three months for the best results and to avoid damaging your lashes. For heated lash curlers I like *1000 Hour Heated Lash Curler

My lashes don’t hold curl very well, is there anything I can do?

Heat your mechanical lash curler under a hair dryer on a medium heat for a few seconds (test it on your wrist first to make sure it’s not too hot) as it will help your curl hold longer. I also recommend using waterproof mascara as they generally tend to hold curl longer than regular mascaras. If straight lashes are a real issue for you, then lash perming could be a good option.

Will a dark Foundation make you look Bronzed?

I’m Judge Makeup Tips and  I’m about to bust you for believing one of the biggest beauty myth’s out; you now have the right to purchase a bronzer.

"Why is your foundation so light? Why don’t you go darker, it will make you look more bronzed" she said. There’s often a bit of confusion as to what foundation actually is. Foundation is designed to even out your skin tone, cover any minor imperfections and create a base for the rest of your makeup.

Foundation is not designed to change the colour of your natural skin tone (tanner is for that, in which case St Tropez make a mean tanner!) Your foundation should match the colour of your body (otherwise it will be too light or too dark and a too dark foundation looks orange) and should be blended well so that it isn’t obvious. If you want a bronzed look apply a bronzing primer before your foundation (I like Smashbox Photo Finish Luminzing Foundation Primer which has just a hint of bronze to make skin look healthy) or use a bronzer such as Benefit Hoola or *Bobbi Brown All Over Bronzing Gel.

BEAUTY MYTH: BUSTED! You shouldn’t be using foundation to make you look more bronzed, use a self tanner and bronzer instead! Case dismissed.

ELF Studio HD Blush Headliner, Superstar, Diva, Encore, Showstopper

ELF Studio HD Blush (from left to right)Headliner, Superstar, Diva, Encore, Showstopper

ELF Studio HD Blushes are beautiful creamy blushes with extreme pigmentation. These cream blushes remind me an awful lot of the Makeup Forever HD Liquid Blushes but are much more budget friendly. The blushes cater to all skin-tones with five five shades available that are extremely pigmented. As these blushes are so pigmented a light hand is essential otherwise they tend to look more like sunburn and less like blush. I’ve found the ideal way to apply these blushes is with a stippling brush as it gives a subtle, airbrushed finish. These blushes do not cling to the dry patches of the skin but also don’t look overly greasy or shiny, the staying power of this is fantastic (almost too good, when swatching they stained) Lastly I feel it is important to mention that the formula is prone to separating, when I purchased mine from the US the formula had separated with an “oil” layer on top, it was fixed by vigorously shaking for a minute or so. Overall I think these are a fantastic, creamy blush at a very  budget friendly price and I would recommend them.

ELF Studio HD Blush Swatches Headliner, Superstar, Diva, Encore, Showstopper

ELF Studio HD Blush Swatches (from left to right)Headliner, Superstar, Diva, Encore, Showstopper Top: blended, bottom:  unblended.

Headliner is a light pretty pink shade with a hint of sine silver shimmer (which is not visible on the skin) It is the most wearable shade out of them all and is perfect for fair/light skin tones

Superstar is a gorgeous matte coral shade with no shimmer. It would be perfect for light to medium skin tones

Diva is a super bright, matte, hot barbie pink shade with no shimmer. This shade would be great for those with a medium/dark skin tone.

Encore is a matte, hot fuchsia shade, it almost looks red when swatched so carefulness in application is a must. This shade has no shimmer and would be great on those with dark skin.

Showstopper is a deep berry shade with the slightest amount of fine shimmer (again not visible on the skin) It is darkest colour in the range and would look amazing on those with very dark skin.

Can you believe it is almost a month to Christmas? I sure as heck can’t. I love the Christmas season and can’t wait until the beginning of December when I can start decorating (I may or may not have already watched Love Actually far, far too many times) I made a huge order at the Sephora Friends and Family sale a few weeks ago (Hourglass Ambient Highlighting Palette come to me you beautiful thing) but I’m trying to hold off getting it sent to Australia until just before Christmas so that I resist the temptation to open all my new goodies. Now I’m trying to tell myself I won’t buy any more makeup until Christmas, but hey we will see how that goes (I’m already eying of the new $10 Stila Palettes at Sephora and the Urban Decay NAKED 3 even though I swore I wouldn’t buy another NAKED product) Make sure to follow me  through Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Newsletter to keep up with my latest product loves (and loathes) hauls, tips and day to day musings of a beauty blogger.

This week I’m loving:

*Arbonne It’s a Long Story Mascara. I’ve never really been a fan of the brands (like Mary Kay, Avon, Arbonne, etc.) where you purchase from an at home catalogue or a consultant (unless you count flipping through Avon catalogues when I was 5 years old, looking at all the pretty things and rubbing the fragrance circles on myself) I’ve heard so many good things about the Arbonne It’s a Long Story Mascara that when I received a press release in my email I knew I wanted to try it. This mascara gives AMAZING length to the lashes and I absolutely love the long, spiky brush which is perfect at catching even the tiniest of lashes and reminds me a lot of Benefit They’re Real (plus it is good for all you vegans out there as it is vegan friendly)  It is on the expensive side and a little hard to get hold of but if you can get your hands on it definitely give it a go!

This week I’m not loving:

MUA Academy Baked Eyeshadow. MUA Academy is one of my favourite drugstore brands and they do  some great products (The Matte & illuminating foundation, the blushes and the coloured mascaras are some of my favourtes) but sadly this product was a miss. MUA Academy’s eyeshadow palettes are amazing and rarely fail to impress me (the Poptastic Eyeshadow Palette has beautiful pigmentation and super bold colours, it is my favourite palette out of them all) but these eyeshadows however get a big thumbs down from me. These eyeshadows just seriously lacked on the pigmentation front, the shades may be beautiful but they just don’t have the pigmentation to go with it and have a tendency to apply unevenly and look cakey and frosty on the eyelids. I was hoping this were going to resemble the lovely Bourjois Baked Eyeshadow Trios but they don’t and were a big disappointment to me.

Hello! I was wondering if you could reccommend a good drug store makeup sealer and/or primer to help makeup stay on? Or any other tips to help makeup stay on through sweat and time? Thanks! :)

First off, make sure you aren’t applying too many hydrating products that provide a large amount of slip to the skin, this can make makeup fade quicker. Use a good oil free moisturiser or a mattifying sunscreen (I like the Boscia Oil Free Hydration Range and the *Ultraceuticals Daily Moisturiser SPF 30+ in Mattifying)ELF Face Primer

Obviously using a good primer is key to long lasting makeup, I personally find that drugstore brands tend to lack a good selection of primers and whilst they aren’t bad they just don’t seem to compare to high end versions. If you can I highly recommend dishing out the cash for the Smashbox Photo Finish Oil Free primer (go for the anti-shine one if sweat and shine is a huge issue) but otherwise the ELF Mineral Infused Face Primer is a great budget friendly alternative. (For the eyes nothing beats NARS Smudge Proof Pro Prime Eyeshadow Base but ELF Essential Eyelid Primer is good to)

The next step is use long wearing products, I find that foundation is the product you need to be concerned about in terms of staying power as it is most prone to fading. I love the Revlon Colorstay range for foundation (for oily skin/people prone to sweating use the oily/combo skin variation) For eye makeup try the Essence Stay All Day Eyeshadow or Maybelline Color tattoos, I also love the Essence Gel Eyeliner and Maybelline The Rocket Waterproof.

Maybelline Shine Free Loose Powder AustraliaFinally it is time to set your makeup. Apply a translucent powder (I like Maybelline Shine Free Loose Powder) using a powder puff to apply (and a clean powder brush to dust off any excess) I find makeup setting sprays do a fantastic job at keeping makeup on, a good budget friendly option is the ELF Makeup Mist & Set.

ALSO: Long-wearing doesn’t mean waterproof and it is very difficult to keep makeup on through sweating/water. Less is always more so apply products sparingly and blend well. Too much product can actually make makeup fade more and cause creasing.

Do you only need to start using an eye cream when you hit your late twenties?

I’m Judge Makeup Tips and  I’m about to bust you for believing one of the biggest beauty myth’s out; you now have the right to purchase an eye cream.

"I’m nearly 30 now so I guess it is time for me to start using eye cream" she said. It’s a common belief that you don’t need to start a skincare routine or using anti-aging products until you actually start to see signs of aging but this is false on so many accounts. The best way to get rid of wrinkles? Prevention. There is no such thing as too early to start a skincare routine or to start using an eye cream. (although you want to avoid ingredients like Retin A at a young age as it can thin out the skin and increase skins photosensitivty) As soon as you possibly can try to use an eye cream and apply it with the pad of your ring finger (it is the most gentle) The skin around the eye area is much, much thinner than the rest of your face so it shows signs of aging much quicker. The sooner you start using an eye cream, the better. You can use your regular moisturiser but these usually aren’t designed to be used around the eye area (and hence can cause irritation) plus eye creams are much more potent and much more hydrating so they help the eye area to maintain elasticity for longer. Ensue you remove your eye makeup each night with a good eye makeup remover (I like Bioderma) and gently pat a tiny amount eye cream (I love Origins Gin Zing Refreshing Eye Cream) around the eye area using your ring finger (don’t apply too much as it can make the eye area appear puffy) wear big sunglasses to prevent crows feet and  to prevent any aging on the face & body use sunscreen everyday (even if it is raining)

BEAUTY MYTH: BUSTED! You should start a skincare routine and start using an eye cream as soon as possible.

Covergirl Lip Perfection Jumbo Gloss Balm Review

Covergirl Lip Perfection Jumbo Gloss Balms left to right: 205 Ballet Twist, 210 Blush Twist, 215 Watermelon Twist, 230 Berry Twist, 235 Coral Twist, 250 Scarlet Twist, 260 Plum Twist, 275 Mauve Twist

Covergirl Lip Perfection Jumbo Gloss Balms are “chubby crayon” style lip pencils. I was hoping these lip crayons would be a good budget friendly alternative to the much raved about Clinique Chubby Sticks but they didn’t fail to disappoint. The finish of these lip crayons is a healthy, creamy finish I wouldn’t class these as a gloss, as moisturising the finish looks I also found these dried out my lips. These lip crayons also clung to ever tiny little dry patch on my lips and accentuated them so in order for me to wear these my lips have to be 100% flake free and in perfect condition. There are some beautiful shades available but they do lack on the pigmentation front. The staying power of these is average and I really wasn’t a fan of the heavy chemical scent. Overall I really wanted to like these but they disappointed me, the only thing they have going for them is the price and some pretty shades but at the end of the day I prefer the Bourjois Color Boost Lip Crayons

Covergirl Lip Perfection Jumbo Gloss Balm Swatchesfrom left to right:205 Ballet Twist, 210 Blush Twist, 215 Watermelon Twist, 230 Berry Twist, 235 Coral Twist, 250 Scarlet Twist, 260 Plum Twist, 275 Mauve Twist

205 Ballet Twist is a pale pink shade with a hint of shimmer. This shade is my least favourite out of the range as it had a tendency to apply unevenly and seriously clung to and accentuated dry patches on the lips.

210 Blush Twist is a pretty, light pink nude shade with no shimmer. This shade is perfect for those with light lips/light skin.

215 Watermelon Twist is a medium pink shade with no shimmer and would suit all skin tones.

230 Berry Twist is one of my favourite shades, it is a gorgeous berry colour that almost appears fuchsia on the lips. Looks amazing on those with light skin.

235 Coral Twist is a gorgeous coral shade and my favourite shade out of the whole range. It has no shimmer and reminds me a lot of Bourjois Lip Crayon in Peach On The Beach.

250 Scarlet Twist is a sheer red shade with no shimmer. Would look great on all skin tones but perfect for those with fair skin due to its cool undertone and would also be great for those who are scared of red lipstick or find it too high maintenance.

260 Plum Twist is a beautiful deep berry shade with no shimmer. I found this shade applied unevenly in comparison to the other shades. It is quite cool toned, hence it makes teeth looks whiter.

275 Mauve Twist is a dark nude shade with a hint of shimmer. It appears as a very red brown on those with light skin but would be great nude shade for those with medium to dark skin.

Whether you’re in the Southern or Northern Hemisphere you’re about to jump into a new season and it’s time to make some changes. It’s  important to make quite a few changes in your skincare to keep your skin in tip-top shape, but it’s also a good idea to swap a few things around in your makeup bag.

Face

Winter: In winter skin tends to look drier and lack luster so a light to medium coverage foundation is generally best at hiding minor imperfections, for any other imperfections use a good concealer. For winter you may need to change your foundation & concealer to a lighter shade so that it perfectly matches your skintone. If you have oily skin ensure you set the oiliest areas of your face with some translucent powder on a powder puff. Try: Revlon Colorstay Foundation, Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer, Essence Translucent Mattifying Face Powder,  *Ultraceuticals Mattifying Daily Moisturiser SPF 30+ (sunscreen should be worn everyday in every season to prevent skin damage.

Summer:‘Tis the season to ditch heavy, full coverage foundations and embrace your natural skin. Switch to a BB Cream or tinted moisturiser instead of foundation (if you have really great skin just stick to concealer) It’s also a good idea to use a foundation & concealer in a shade darker for Summer as skintones generally turn slightly darker.  Powders have a tendency to oxidize with oils on the skin and as skin tends to be oilier in the summer time it’s better to go for a setting spray instead of a powder. Try:  Missha Skin Perfect BB Cream, Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, *Ultraceuticals Mattifying Daily Moisturiser SPF 30+ (sunscreen should be worn everyday in every season to prevent skin damage.

Cheeks

Winter: High pigment powder and cream blushes are fantastic for giving skin that real rosy glow in the winter time (try a cream blush in a berry shade applied with a stippling blush for winter-kissed cheeks) Swap a dark, shimmery bronzer for just a hint of contouring under the cheekbones and around the hairline. A pinky illuminator will help add a pick me up to dreary winter skin. Try: Bourjois Baked Blush, ELF Studio HD Cream Blushes, Revlon PhotoReady SkinLights Illuminator in Pink Light.

Summer: As the weather heats up and we become more active our makeup becomes very prone to fading so instead of high pigment blushes opt for a sheer cheek stain (which can also double up as a lip colour) Use a powder bronzer with minimal shimmer (or a gel bronzer, I like *Bobbi Brown All Over Bronzing Gel)  and apply in a “3” motion (around the hairline & temples, under the cheekbones and down near the jawline) for a sun-kissed glow (bonus points for adding a champagne toned illuminator on your cheekbonesTry: Benefit Cheek & Lip Tints, Benefit Hoola, *Bobbi Brown All Over Bronzing Gel, Stila All Over Liquid Luminizer in Kitten

Eyes

Winter: It’s the perfect time to experiment with makeup. Loads of lashes, smoky eyes, winged eyeliner, cut creases and glitter, nothing is too much (except maybe a full eyelid of winged eyeliner or frosty blue eyeshadow)

Summer: Keep the eyes clean of jet black mascara and opt for a clear mascara which can be wiggled through the roots of curled lashes and brushed through the brows to give your makeup a fresher edge. If you insist on eyeliner and eyeshadow opt for either a hint of brown eyeliner smudged in between the lashes (or a nude shade on your waterline) and a dusting of bronze eyeshadow over the eyelids. Try: Maybelline Great Lash Clear Mascara, Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler

Lips

Winter: Dark berries, plums, reds, wines,  mahogany’s and burgundy’s with blue undertones in matte formulas get a big tick and are a definite must for winter. Either use a fantastic matte lipstick, a mattifying lipstick base or after applying lipstick place a tissue over your lips and dust a small amount of translucent powder over it  to achieve the matte look. Dark, matte shades tend to be quite high maintenance so having well hydrated lips and using a matching lip liner underneath are essential. If you want to amp it up a little more dab a blue toned illuminator onto the center of your lips to make lips look larger and add an unexpected twist. Try: MAC Cosmetics Matte Lipstick, *Australis Mattifying Lipstick Base

Summer: Dark, matte formulas may look luxurious, but in the summer time it’s better to go for something a little less high maintenance. Instead, opt for bright creamy lipsticks, sheer tinted lip balms and stains. Try:  Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters, Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balms, Benefit Cheek & Lip Tints.

Powder, Pencil, Liquid or Gel Eyeliner?

Eyeliner often seems like an extra step in your makeup routine, but it can make all the difference. Just a hint of it smudged in between your lashes or a clean line swept across your lash line can glam up your look, add more definition and make your lashes look thicker. Nowadays there are loads of formulas on the market instead of your regular ol’ pencil and they can create heaps of different looks.

Which Formula of Eyeliner Should I use?

Which Formula of Eyeliner Should I use?

Powder Eyeliner

Great for experimenting with bright eyeshadow colours as eyeliners and creating softer looking eyeliner. When dry it can be difficult to apply but when used with water (or a mixing medium) the same application technique as gel liner can be used.  Either use a standard eyeshadow or cake eyeliner. Top picks: Regular eyeshadow, E.L.F Studio Makeup Lock & Seal, MAC PRO Mixing Medium Eyeliner

* Can be used wet or dry.

* An easy DIY option.

* Soft, smudgy finish.

* Hundreds of shade possibilities.

* Not very pigmented

* Not suitable for tightlining or waterlining.

* If used dry or with water staying power is poor.

Which Formula of Eyeliner Should I use?

Which Formula of Eyeliner Should I use?

Pencil Eyeliner - Urban Decay 24/7

Great if you’re a beginner or just want a 2-in-1 product that can be used as an eyeshadow as well as an eyeliner. If you want an eyeliner to use on the waterlines of the eye or want a soft looking eyeliner than a pencil formula is your best bet. Top picks: Urban Decay 24/7 Pencil Eyeliner, Rimmel Soft Kohl Kajal Pencil Eyeliner

* Easy to use formula great for beginners

* Can easily be smudged to create a softer finish

* Can be used all over the eyelid as an eyeshadow

* Available in waterproof formulas

* Average pigmentation

* Suitable for tightlining and waterlining (kohl formulas work best)

* Not great for creating precise lines

Which Formula of Eyeliner Should I use?

Which Formula of Eyeliner Should I use?

Liquid Eyeliner - Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner

Great if you want a thin, precise line close to the lashes and like to experiment with different eyeliner looks. Not great for beginners as the liner can’t be easily smudged. Usually not a wide variety of shades available but usually has great staying powder. Top picks: Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner and Physicians Formula 2 in 1 Lash Boosting Serum Eyeliner

* Not great for beginners

* Fantastic for creating precise lines

* Good staying power

* Tends to have a glossy finish

* Perfect for winged eyeliner/graphic eyeliner looks.

* Unless a three dot variation is used tightlining can be difficult.

* Not suitable for use on the waterline (it will burn your eyes!)

Which Formula of Eyeliner Should I use?

Which Formula of Eyeliner Should I use?

Gel Eyeliner - Stila Smudge Pot

Basically a hybrid of gel and pencil liner. Good staying power and able to create precise lines but can also be easily smudged (before the liner sets) and used as an all-over eyeshadow/base. It can be used to tightline and waterline the eyes with a flat liner brush and usually has great pigmentation. Top picks: Essence Gel Eyeliner (only available in select countries), Stila Smudge Pots

* Matte Finish

* Great for precise lines

* Fantastic pigmentation

* Can be easily smudged

* Once set, has great staying power

* Can be used as an allover eyeshadow or as a base for eyeshadows.

* Many brands offer a wide variety of shade options

* Suitable for tightlining and waterlining

My lips are naturally pigmented. If i put a face powder on concealer before i use any lip product so that the colour will show, will my lips be dry?

Too Faced Lip Insurance

Using concealer on the lips generally tends to be very drying and setting it with powder is likely to cause your lip colour to apply unevenly. There are  quite a few things you can do to tone down the natural colour of your lips and make lipstick look more intense.

Lip primer. Using a lip primer will prevent colour from feathering and fading and much like an eye primer will make colour appear more pigmented. I like Too Faced Lip Insurance

Lip liner. Using a lip liner that exactly matches your lipstick shade over your entire lips as a base will not only make your lipstick last longer, but will help the colour look much more pigmented. My all time favourite lip liners are Essence Lip Liners (which are also budget friendly)

MAC Lipstick Ruby Woo

High pigment lipsticks. Many lipsticks come in sheer, lightweight and moisturising formulas, if you have very pigmented lips these will be no good for you. Instead, opt for highly pigmented lipstick formulas, these don’t necessarily mean expensive products, just products packed full of intense colour. I love: Wet N Wild Mega Last Lipsticks, Rimmel Kate Moss Lasting Finish Lipsticks (the apocalips are great too, but are more of a gloss) MAC Lipsticks.

If worst comes to worst and that still doesn’t help you can try mixing a little creamy concealer in with a lip balm and applying it to your lips, but be careful as it can be drying and taste a lip gross.
