There’s nothing more frustrating than spending ages perfecting your makeup only to notice that its disappeared by noon!  With these tips and tricks you can keep your makeup looking great and your face relatively shine free.

Moisturiser

Prep

The first step to any makeup routine is skincare, but the key is not to overdo it. Heavy moisturisers, serums and oils can provide an over-abundance of moisture to the skin causing makeup to slip and slide all over the place. A light layer of moisturiser (or sunscreen) applied at least 5 minutes before makeup is all that is required to help makeup apply smoothly yet still sit on the skin well.

Becca Ever Matte Poreless Priming Perfector

Prime

It still boggles my mind to this day how many people don’t use a primer how many don’t know what it’s for! Think of a face primer just like a primer for your walls when painting them, it means you don’t need to use as much paint and it is less likely to flake off and fade. There are hundreds of different face primers out there for different skin types but it sounds like you would best benefit from an oil-absorbing, mattifying formula like Becca Ever Matte Poreless Priming Perfector.

Revlon ColorStay Foundation

Apply

Sometimes, no matter how much we want to like a product it just doesn’t tick all the boxes and it sounds like this could be the case for your foundation. Some foundations simply don’t stay put and have a tendency to fade and melt off the skin so it may be time to consider switching to a different formula. I love the Revlon ColorStay Foundation for the staying power, coverage and all-around greatness (comes in two formulas, one for dry skin and one for oily skin)

Urban Decay Setting Spray

Set

Setting your makeup into place is one of the most important things you can do to help increase the longevity of your makeup and whilst I’m the first person to endorse and embrace ditching the powder sometimes you gotta do, what you gotta do and if it makes your makeup last, then who really cares? Given that your two concerns are staying power and oiliness a powder would definitely be a great way to go. Just avoid anything heavy, foundation-like or overly pigmented or you risk looking cakey. I love Rimmel Stay Matte Powder (an oldie, but a goodie)

Spray

Setting sprays are a reasonably new innovation to the beauty world but that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a place on your face. If you REALLY want your makeup to last, you need a setting spray, no questions asked. Unlike powders and primers these are fine mists that you apply after all over your makeup to help “lock” your makeup into place. When you’re applying them over your face they usually feel like a waste of time and money, but they really do make a difference. For major oil control purposes try the Urban Decay De-Slick Setting Spray.
