DIY can be a great way to save money and create something that you just can’t seem to find, but is there such a thing as being too crafty? DIY furniture, decor, painting and even clothes can be great, but DIY makeup? Not so much.
As a beauty blogger I hear many beauty tips and DIY makeup options, most of which I think are complete and utter nonsense and crayons as lipstick? Well that just tops the cake.
In a limit to decrease lead exposure from lipsticks someone on the internet came up with the great terrible idea to make lipsticks out of non-toxic crayola crayons because “If kids could eat them without getting sick they must be safe”
The recipe for crayon lipsticks goes a little something like this:
- 1 whole crayola crayon
- Olive Oil
- Food-Grade Essential Oils
The process usually involves mixing all of these together over boiling hot water to make a paste, sounds simple right? Just because children can eat them without getting sick doesn’t mean you should be using them as a lipstick.
Makeup colours undergo strict testing by organizations like the FDA to ensure it is safe for people to use as a cosmetic, lipstick crayons on the other hand do not undergo the same testing. Some crayons actually contain more lead than lipsticks so wearing a lipstick that does contain lead isn’t going to harm you unless you sit there and eat them.
Crayons may be non-toxic on their own, but mixing and heating ingredients can actually cause them to become extremely toxic. If you want a lipstick there are plenty of brands out there who create them at a decent price and if you are REALLY worried about lead in your lipsticks there are some great natural brands on the market.
