This is one of the most common questions I get and also the most common one that I almost never answer and there’s a reason why. It may not be what you want to hear but there is no magical brand out there that won’t cause you to breakout. Every persons skin is different and whilst one person might break out to a certain ingredient another person may not, and vice versa.
Products and brands aren’t usually the cause of breakouts, ingredients (or ingredients reacting with other ingredients) are. Now because it can be difficult (plus insanely expensive) to find out what ingredients your skin breaks out to there are a few things you can do:
1. Have a good skincare routine: this is the best thing you can do for your skin. Use a good cleanser mornings and evenings one with salicylic acid or tea tree oil will chemically exfoliate skin (I like gentle sulfate-free foaming cleansers and cleansing oils) and use a good oil free moisturiser in the evenings and a sunscreen with Zinc or Titanium Dioxide (they help to repair the skin so great for acne) of at-least SPF 30 during the day. Moisturising is still essential even if you have acne otherwise your skin may over-produce oil to compensate for what it isn’t getting. I also suggest you use a clay mask once a week to draw out any impurities and to avoid exfoliating until your skin is clear, exfoliating on skin with acne can cause it to spread. I also suggest getting a good spot treatment and toothpaste doesn’t count…
2. Avoid pore clogging ingredients: whilst I love oil (olive, argan, rosehip and jobabo are some of my favourites) and not just for dry skin (it has amazing benefits on oily and acne-prone skin as it cleanses well without stripping) I’m not a fan of ingredients like mineral oil (Paraffinum Liquidum) these clog the pores by leaving a film over the skin where nothing can be absorbed. Not only does this bad boy increase breakouts but it also increases the skins photosensitivity (making skin more sensitive to the sun) Opt for skincare and makeup products that are mineral oil free.
3. Avoid heavy, thick creams: A nice thick moisturiser is my favourite to slather on after a long day but using it if you have acne/acne-prone skin is just asking for trouble. Light, oil free moisturisers are key.
4. Last but not least: Skincare is more commonly the cause of breakouts, not your makeup plus without decent skin you can’t have good makeup. However if breakouts are a real ongoing problem opt to brands like Almay, Clinique and Physicians Formula which are specifically designed for sensitive skin, this doesn’t mean they won’t break you but are usually gentler and non-comedogenic (non pore clogging)
