Brown eyes? Blue eyes? Green eyes? Hazel eyes? Grey eyes? Either way I’m a believer in the theory of: Love something? Wear it! There are no rules when it comes to makeup. However if you’re wanting to really enhance a certain feature certain colours and techniques can help. Generally the most flattering shades for your eye colour are ones on the opposite side of the colour spectrum.
It’s important to note that these shades don’t just have to be worn as eyeshadow! Experiment by wearing them as eyeliner or mascara. If you’re scared of bold shades try using them in sheer formulas like creams or liquids and blend them in with your fingertips.
If you still struggle with finding your perfect eyeshadow shade to compliment your eyes try a kit specifically designed to your eye colour and examine the shades in them, otherwise purchase one! Many drugstore brands do them and the quality is often quite good.
Light Brown Eyes
Brown eyes are a neutral canvas to work on so choose whichever shade sings to you! Light brown eyes can pull of so many colours from cool and warm toned neutral shades (dark browns and mocha’s look pretty) Blues accentuate all shades of brown eyes and are great for packing a punch.
Light Brown eyes should try: Dark brown, mocha, khaki, stone, bark and blue tones.
Dark Brown Eyes
Like light brown eyes dark brown (or almost black) eyes have a blank canvas to work on so most shades can be pulled off quite easily. Most shades used on light brown eyes can be used on dark brown eyes, but some shades can really make dark brown eyes pop. Cool toned shades (like silvers, whites and teals) provide a gorgeous contrast against the warmth of brown eyes, but golds, coppers and bronzes can also look especially pretty. Bold blues and blue based purples can also really enhance dark brown eyes and give a burst of colour.
Dark Brown eyes should try: Chocolate, silver, white, teal, cobalt blue, navy and indigo shades.
Hazel Eyes
Because hazel eyes have a mix of several different colours most shades can be worn, depending on which colour you most want to accentuate you can use purple shades to bring out any green tones. Want to enhance the brown? Try golden browns, taupe’s and greys.
Hazel eyes should try: Lavender, Lilac, Plum, Violet, Pink, Grey, Camel, Taupe, Brown and Khaki shades.
Green Eyes
Green eyes can rock some amazing colours when they’re worn right. Earthy shades (like browns, beiges and taupes) are great for daytime and can pack a punch whilst looking natural. Rich purple toned shades are my favourite for accentuating green eyes, deep purples and sheer lilacs both look amazing. Re the green eye makeup debate, green can be used, but it’s important to use it in shades that aren’t too close to your eye colour, deep forest greens are your safest bet.
Green eyes should try: Beige, camel, slate, taupe, purple, plum, and lilac tones.
Blue Eyes
Blue eyes look really great with warm, shimmery shades (like golds and bronzes) but cooler shades like taupes and lilacs can also look amazing.
Blue eyes should try: Gold, bronze, copper, champagne, apricot, peach, ash, taupe, grey, heather, slate, and lilac tones.
Grey Eyes
Grey eyes have a blank canvas so choose any shade that your heart desires, grey eyes are quite cool toned so warm shades can look great and really draw attention to the eyes. It’s best to avoid using light whites and greys as they could make you look washed out. Grey eyes usually have hints of blue or green in them so wearing shades to compliment them eye colours can also work (green eye makeup also looks great!)
Grey eyes should try: bronze, gold, copper, orange, dark grey and shimmery charcoal shades.
