Back to the basics: Concealer
Concealer should be applied AFTER foundation (unless a colour correcting concealer or a powder foundation is used) This is because foundation will generally provide some coverage and applying your concealer first means you might rub it off when you apply foundation.
Concealer is best applied with a small brush and then blended out with the fingertips using a patting motion, the warmth of the skin helps to “melt” product onto the skin so it looks natural and well blended.
The purpose of concealer is to provide additional coverage to any skin concerns/flaws such as: pimples, broken capillaries, redness, scars and discolouration. Concealer isn’t designed:
- To be used all over your face to provide full coverage, it will look unnatural and cakey.
- To completely hide flaws and make them invisible, even when using concealer pimples and other flaws may still be visible.
Concealers come in powder, liquid and cream formulas, but it is important not to use the same concealer under the eye area as you would on the rest of your face.
- For pimples, broken capillaries, scars and discolouration: Use a thick, waxy concealer with no light reflecting properties.
- For dark circles and redness: Use a creamy, moisturising concealer whether you use one with light reflecting properties (which will reflect light making the area appear brighter) or not, is entirely up to you.
Your concealer should exactly match the shade of your foundation, using a shade lighter under the eyes can cause a “reverse raccoon” effect. (Colour correcting is a different topic altogether)
