Many beauty DIY tips circulate the web, from pimple cures to lip plumpers and now gel eyeliner.
Gel eyeliner is one of my favourite products and for good reason, it is smooth, creamy and can double up as not only an eyeliner, but an eyeshadow base too. However it’s best to give the the DIY option a miss.
Heating your kohl pencil? That’s fine. Fixing your dried up gel eyeliner with mixing medium? That’s pretty safe and effective too. Mixing Vaseline and old powder eyeshadow? Not so much.
Vaseline is designed to provide a “barrier” over the skin and “lock in moisture” but it isn’t designed for use around the eyes as it can trap in makeup, dirt’s and bacteria so don’t be surprised if your eyes end up feeling itchy and look blurry.
Aside from the fact that Vaseline isn’t designed to be used on the eyes/eye area the thick and greasy formula means this tip wouldn’t work anyway. A Vaseline gel eyeliner is likely to smudge and smear within the first minute you put it on.
There are hundreds of gel eyeliners on the market now and drugstore brands make them too. Essence does an amazing gel eyeliner formula (that I prefer over high end brands) and Maybelline’s isn’t bad either. If you still insist on making your own eyeliner mix a small amount of mixing medium with a powder eyeshadow or pigment.
