Face primers are fantastic, and even though I don’t wear one every time I do my makeup (if I’m wearing tinted moisturiser/bb cream I’ll usually skip it)if I need my makeup to look flawless I’ll usually use one. Don’t be fooled into thinking they are just another product to buy so brands can get more money, they are much more than that.
In short, primers are fantastic products that you apply after you’ve cleansed and moisturised your skin but before you apply any coverage products like foundation or concealer. Majority of primers are designed to help make your makeup last a lot longer and smooth over the surface of the skin so your makeup applies evenly. For tips on how to apply primer, check out my video below.
PRIMERS FOR EVERYONE:
If you are looking for a great primer and don’t have any specific skin concerns a silicone based primer designed to help increase the wear of your makeup is best. Try: Smashbox Photo Finish Oil Free Primer
or ELF Studio Mineral Infused Primer - Clear
PRIMERS FOR DRY/SENSITIVE SKIN:
If you’re someone with dry skin like myself you probably find that makeup has a tendency to appear flaky and cakey on your skin. A hydrating primer can do a wonderful job at making your makeup apply smoothly, try: Clarins Beauty Flash Balm*, Tarte Clean Slate Flawless Primer
PRIMERS FOR OILY SKIN:
If you’re someone with oily skin you are going to want a primer designed to help reduce the appearance of shine and keep your makeup on all day. Try: Smashbox Photo Finish Oil Free Primer - Light
or if you have super oily skin the Smashbox Photo Finish AntiShine Primer. Whatever you do, don’t use milk of magnesia.
PRIMERS FOR LARGE PORES/UNEVEN SKIN:
If you’ve suffered with bad acne in the past and have been left with “ice pick” acne scars or just have super large pores on an uneven skin texture a velvety, resurfacing primer is what you want. Try: Benefit Porefessional Primer* or L’Oreal Base Magique Primer
PRIMERS FOR FINE LINES/BUMPY SKIN:
If you have wrinkles, are someone who’s just starting to get their first finelines or just someone who has a slightly bumpy, uneven skin texture a smoothing, silicone based that blurs imperfections like Garnier Perfect Blur 5 Sec Smoothing Base Perfector* and Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Primer are fantastic.
FOR REDNESS:
Whilst there are a whole load of different colour correcting primers on the market the most common one is one for redness. A green face primer is fantastic at neutralizing redness on the skin. If you have fair skin or are afraid of looking like Shrek mix it in with a standard facial primer of foundation.Try: L’Oreal Studio Secrets Anti Redness Primer
or ELF Studio Mineral Infused Primer - Green
FOR DULL SKIN:
If you have dull skin or just love to rock the dewy skin look a primer that contains light reflecting particles is your best bet. You can also smooth a standard illuminator over your skin before applying makeup for a similar effect (although it won’t last as long) Try: Benefit Girl Meets Pearl Primer or Benefit That Gal Primer
FOR A BRONZED GLOW:
If you are someone who loves to fake the “I’ve just been on holiday” glow then a bronzing primer is your best way to do it. If you have fair skin mix one in with your regular face primer of foundation. I love: Bourjois Bronzing Primer and Becca Bronzing Skin Perfector
